Alright, Thunderball is back online. I have a few more programs to put on her to bring back to where she was when her hard drive died. She's purring like a well oiled machine, and, oddly enough, she sounds just a little different. Her hard drive sounds different. It's kind of weird to think that you tune yourself to the way things sound. Actually, that's not weird. There was many a time when I was on my submarine and I could audibly sense something change, which often precluding a drill or casualty. Right now, I'm happy to have the sound of a running hard drive over a beeping broken one.
The Good: ifixit.com rocks. I recommend this site to anyone who wants to replace something in their mac. The instructions are straight forward and focused on the task you're looking to do. It was worth tinkering under the hood of the laptop to see just how small and tightly organized things are. You're never going to learn something if you don't do it yourself-- especially if you use tech but don't quite know how it all works. I'm ready to put the jalopy pc back into the closet. Actually, I think I might wipe the drive and sell that, too. Get the right tools, too. I got the right ones, which kept me from stripping screws and ruining successive upgrades.
The Bad: I went with the same size hard drive. I probably should have gotten a larger one, but since there maybe a Thunderball successor in the near future, it didn't quite seem worth it.
The Ugly: I'm getting a LOT of interference on my wireless router now. I'm going to have to work with the settings to put it on a channel with the least amount of interference. The router is about 8 feet from where it used to be, but I'm having serious trouble getting a decent signal from my guest room/office/batcave.
Do you remember your first flight? Where did you go? Why?

It was not long after I finished boot camp. I tried taking the bus home once. Six hours later and noxious from fumes, I swore never to take Greyhound again. Instead, to make the normal 3 hour trip, I took the puddle jumper flight that got me home in about 45 min ($99 45min > $60 6hrs). It was intimidating at first, but now that I've flewn probably over 50 times, it's not so big a deal anymore. The part I hate most about flying now is not the actual flying part. It's the long wait in lines with TSA representatives who look at you vacantly and repeat the same robotic phrases over and over again. If the airlines are hurting so badly, why don't they make the suckiest part suck less? Why pipe people through lines of 4 when there are 10 x-ray machines available? Why do I have to have my bag x-rayed twice, opened, examined, and x-rayed again? My backpack has had more x-rays than I have. Why is there never any AC outlets anywhere in a terminal and you have to pay for wireless access when it's already an inconvenience to you as a passenger to be at the airport an hour and a half early (longer if you're on an international flight)? And why to people with laptop always have to sit on the floor next to an outlet look homeless? Is it really that hard to put AC outlets into a terminal or maybe some pillows? I wouldn't mind feeling a little like a Shiek or at least having a beanbag after being on a plane for 14 hours. I'm actually happy to get on the plane. It means I'm going somewhere else. Oh, and I went home to see my family.
